Karen Lenero-Perez: VP Internal Realtions

Hello everyone! My name is Karen Lenero-Perez, and I am currently a third-year Health Sciences student in the Life Science stream. I am thrilled to be running for the position of Vice President Internal for the HSUSU team for the 2025–2026 term.

This opportunity marks what I hope will be my third consecutive year as part of this incredible team. I began my journey with HSUSU as the UGSC Science Representative in my first year; this past year, I had the privilege of serving as VP Finance. This role

was new to me and helped me grow my skills in financial management and keeping the budget on track. I am grateful for this experience as it was really fulfilling.

I am eager to continue building on these supporting and learning experiences by stepping into the VP Internal position. I’m passionate about expanding my involvement by working more closely with faculty and enhancing collaboration across our community. I am

particularly excited about the opportunity to help create engaging, inclusive, and memorable events for Health Sciences students.

In this role, I am committed to ensuring that all HSUSU meeting minutes and applications are thoroughly managed and organized, and that room bookings within the faculty—especially in the Commons—are efficiently monitored.

Being part of HSUSU has helped me to grow tremendously, not just as a leader but also as an advocate for our students. It has pushed me to become the best version of myself while working alongside a supportive and driven team. I’m excited for the chance to

continue making meaningful contributions and to represent the voices of my fellow Health Sciences students.

Thank you all so much for your continued support!

Karen Lenero-Perez

Shoron Alam: SFSS Rep

Hi everyone,

My name is Shoron Alam, and I’m running to be your SFSS Representative for the Health Sciences Undergraduate Student Union a role I’ve proudly held over the past year. Before that, I served as an Assistant to the Vice President at the SFSS, giving me over a year and a half of direct experience within the student society. This background has equipped me with the knowledge, confidence, and commitment to keep advocating for you and to keep getting things done.

Over the past year, I’ve worked to make the decisions made at the SFSS council more transparent and accessible for Health Sciences students. With the support and help of some amazing HSUSU execs, I launched The SFSS Scoop a series of updates shared on HSUSU’s social media to keep you informed about my work on council. Through these posts, I aimed to not only share what was happening behind the scenes but to create a space where you felt encouraged to reach out with your thoughts and concerns. Because to me, student governance should never feel distant, your voice deserves to be heard, seen, and acted on.

But beyond the council meetings and social media posts, I genuinely love HSUSU. This union means a lot to me, and I want to keep helping it grow. Whether it's amplifying your concerns, pushing for better supports on campus, or making sure Health Sciences students have a strong voice in university decisions, I’m here for it.

If re-elected, I’ll continue to push for transparency, accountability, and meaningful action, because I believe we deserve nothing less. Thank you so much, and I hope to have your support once again!

Best Regards,

Shoron Alam

Vandad Hazrati: VP Student Life

Hi everyone! My name is Vandad Hazrati, and I’m excited to be running for VP Student Life in the Health Sciences Undergraduate Student Union.

Over the past year, I had the chance to work alongside the current VP Student Life while serving as a UGSC Science Representative. Being involved in events like FROSH taught me how much planning and care goes into creating spaces where students feel welcomed, supported, and connected. I’ve gathered feedback, brainstormed new ideas, and I’m ready to take the lead in bringing even more exciting, meaningful, and wellness-focused events to life.

If elected, I’ll prioritize inclusive programming, student feedback, and collaborations that truly reflect what Health Sci students want to see. I’m passionate about making student life more vibrant, and I’d love your support in making that happen.

Thank you for considering me!

Deion Fairfax: SFSS Rep

Hello HSCI majors/minors/course takers! My name is Deion Fairfax and I’m honoured to be running to become your next SFSS Representative for the HSUSU. I’m passionate about building stronger connections between HSCI students and the SFSS, as well as making sure that HSCI students are more informed in the decisions being made in council in order to have a better department and student experience as a whole.

My various experiences include:

- Volunteering for the SFSS Pancake Breakfasts and cleaning + stocking the SFU Community Free Fridge

- Student-at-Large for the SFSS University and Academic Affairs Committee

- Involvement in multiple Senate committees:

- Diverse Qualifications Adjudication Committee

- Senate Committee on University Teaching and Learning

- Senate Committee on Disciplinary Appeals

- A drive to learn and push boundaries!

Through my background, I understand how student advocacy works at both the union and university level, but I want to take the next step in order to make a bigger impact. If I’m elected, I’ll try my best to:

Be an active participant in council meetings, not just someone who listens in to be marked as present. This also includes making the added effort to attend meetings in-person.

Give the option for students to contact me for council meeting updates, and after, giving out input for me to communicate back to the council. I’ll have a separate Instagram account for this purpose. I’ll also consistently send important council meeting updates on the HSUSU social media.

Continue bridging the gap between HSCI students and the SFSS, so that students don’t feel disconnected with SFSS decisions. This includes making SFSS decisions more accessible, representing HSCI-specific needs, and helping students access resources that the SFSS offers.

If any of these goals resonate with you, then I kindly invite you to vote for me between April 25-27 in your SFU mail. If anybody has questions, don’t be afraid to reach out to me @deion4sfssrep. Let’s bring real impact to the council!

Sarah Raufi: I-EDI Rep

Hello SFU FHS Students!

My name is Sarah Raufi and I am a third year Health Sciences student at FHS. As a visitor on this land, coming from a background of being a second-generation immigrant settler, I intend to deepen my own understanding of the local indigenous communities of the unceded Traditional Coast Salish Lands including the Tsleil-Waututh (səlilwətaʔɬ), Kwikwetlem (kʷikʷəƛəm), Squamish (Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw) and Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəyəm) Nations in which this I-EDI work is conducted on.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to run for the I-EDI representative position. I have had the chance to be involved with HSUSU through planning events, building connections and strengthening FHS-student relations. In particular, serving as one of the inaugural I-EDI representatives allowed me to develop core initiatives such as the I-EDI learning circles that my co-representative and I have developed and fine tuned. As a voice for the student body, I have represented FHS students within the FHS I-EDI advisory circle meetings, ensuring that my comments are drawn through cultural humility and an equitable lens.

If I am elected as one of the I-EDI representatives for this upcoming year, I am committed to fulfill my responsibilities in the role and continually engage with the FHS community to (un)learn harmful perspectives and proactively seek to reflect on these biases. I will strive to continue the important work in topics surrounding equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization and indigenization within the faculty while providing opportunities for students to contribute to these meaningful conversations.

Sincerely,

Sarah Raufi

Dayton Liu: UGSC Science Rep

As a Health Sciences student and someone who has led multiple clubs before (e.g. former executive of the Coquitlam SD43 Student Leadership Council), I know firsthand how important clear communication between students and faculty is. Whether it's small trivial academic concerns or larger ideas you hope to see being implemented into HSUSU, I would love for the opportunity to create a space where such conversations can happen comfortably and productively. Thus, I’m running to become your UGSC Science Representative with the intention of making sure all HSCI-sciences students feel heard regardless of how "trivial" they may think their concerns are.

If elected, I’ll host accessible office hours, lead open forums, and introduce clear, engaging updates summarizing key points from committee meetings. I believe our academic concerns—big or small—deserve attention, and I’m excited to help build a more connected and supported HSCI-Sciences community.

Vote Dayton Liu to make sure your voices are heard!

Palakreet Kaur: Creative Director

Hi! I’m Palakreet Kaur, a fourth-year Health Sciences student at SFU. I’m excited to run for Creative Director with HSUSU for the 2025/26 term.

I’m passionate about design and would love to help shape HSUSU’s brand through creative, inclusive, and engaging visuals for events, merchandise, and promotions. As I’ll be on campus regularly, I’m looking forward to staying connected with students and contributing fresh ideas to our community.

Thank you for considering me!

Bhavjit Bhumber: UGSC Science Rep

Hi everyone! My name is Bhavjit, and I’m running to be your UGSC Representative – Sciences because I truly care about your voice, your future, and your experience as Health Sciences students.

I know how stressful university can be—balancing classes while also trying to find research, jobs, and volunteer opportunities that aren’t always easy to access. I’ve been there too, and I want to help change that. If I’m elected, I’ll work hard to share important updates from faculty meetings and help you find meaningful opportunities that support your goals.

You deserve to feel heard, supported, and connected. Whether it’s helping you find the right opportunity, reducing stress, or just being someone who listens—I’ll do my best to be there for you. We’re all learning and growing together, and I want to help make that journey easier.

One quote that inspires me is: “It’s fine to celebrate success, but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.” – Bill Gates. University can be full of ups and downs, but every challenge is a chance to grow—and I want to help us face those challenges together.

Vote for me, and I will be there to support you as a teammate. Let’s build a stronger, more caring, and more connected Health Sciences community.
